InterServer Expert Review
It may fly slightly under the radar, but among those in the sector, InterServer has built a reputation for reliability and performance over its 20-year career. The hosting company offers a variety of plans—shared hosting, VPS, and dedicated servers—and though its basic plans may be on the higher end of the price spectrum the service becomes significantly more affordable as you move up in tiers.
One of the biggest benefits of the company is its privately-owned data center, managed out of the US, which gives it greater control over its hosting network. InterServer’s expansion efforts have also helped it build a nationwide network that is ideal for companies of all sizes. We tested the company’s platform over several months and found that it lives up to the hype. Read our review below to see if InterServer is the right fit for you.
Pros and Cons
- A nationwide (US) network of fiber optic infrastructure means high speeds and throughput regardless of location
- Find the right package for your specific needs with the company’s variety of plans for hosting.
- Speed up your setup process by easily migrating your existing website for free in a few clicks.
- Enjoy faster loading times across your web pages thanks to InterServer’s automated caching for all websites.
- Take advantage of unlimited storage to make sure your website has the right assets in place to be the best possible.
- Always keep your website online with the company’s proven uptimes and fast loading times.
- Easily transfer your domain, or get a new one, for just $1.99 with your registration to InterServer.
- The company’s servers are only located in the US, so companies in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere may have minor issues connecting and maintaining the highest possible speeds.
- Many of the 1-click integrations available can be expensive when using multiple to build your website.
- VPS and Dedicated hosting plans don’t include a money back guarantee.
Pricing and Payment Methods
One of the things that stood out to us most in our InterServer review is the company’s multi-faceted hosting plans, which range from standard shared hosting to more specific tools for unique requirements. InterServer’s standard web hosting plan starts at $5.00 monthly, and includes free unlimited storage, data transfers, and FTP accounts to organize your website. You also gain access to over 450 applications you can integrate into your website, including integrations for WordPress, Joomla, Magento, and more.
Pro Hosting—the company’s reseller tier—offers plans that feature anywhere from 80GB to 240GB of disk space, up to 2000GB of disk space, and integrated cPanel accounts for all accounts. You can choose to start as low as $19.95 monthly for the basic tier of the Pro hosting plans.
If you need VPS, you’ll be pleased to find that InterServer offers some of the more customizable plans on the market. The most basic VPS plans available start as low as $6 a month, and include a single CPU core, 2GB of RAM memory, 30GB of SSD storage, and 2TB of transfer bandwidth. Windows plans start at $10 a month and feature the same specifications. You can choose a variety of other OS options, including Debian, CentOS, Ubuntu, OpenWall, Slackware, and more.
Finally, if your company has heavy-duty needs and requires its own servers, InterServer offers plans that start at $70 monthly and feature 8GB of RAM, 250GB of disk space, and 4 CPU cores. You can customize each of your plans, and gain up to 24 cores, as well as deploy a server instance in under 15 minutes.
Ease of Use
We found that InterServer can be useful for a wide range of users, though choosing the right plan is important for best results. The company’s standard shared hosting plans give you enough features that make it easy to get started, migrate or build your website, and launch it. This includes features such as InterServer’s over 450 available apps, an unlimited number of email accounts, and integrated cPanel for your websites.
On the other hand, the company’s VPS and dedicated hosting plans are geared toward more tech-savvy users. Because it’s made to be highly customizable and flexible, the company’s VPS hosting does not include many common features, like integrated cPanel.
This means that you must set up your server, its management, and then start on your website. While more experienced users can do so quickly, and it offers the benefit of doing whatever you like with your infrastructure, it may be challenging for beginners looking for a plug and play solution.
Load Times and Reliability
For us, one of the most important aspects of any hosting service is how fast and reliable its service is. We test each hosting service we review over several months to see how it performs on average and were happy to see that InterServer can hold its own with others in the industry.
One of the more impressive aspects of the company’s service is its 99.97% average uptime. This is higher than the average and means that websites rarely experiences outages. Additionally, InterServer performed well in our loading time tests, starting the loading process as quickly as 222ms—a blazing fast performance. One of the company’s secrets for this performance is the care it takes not to overload its servers, allowing only 100 new users a day and limiting their server capacity to 50%.
An area where the InterServer platform stands out prominently is features. You can customize your website with nearly 500 1-click integrations such as WordPress, Joomla, and the ever-popular e-commerce service Magento. Additionally, the company’s shared plans give you unlimited storage, bandwidth, SSD caching servers, and an integrated CLoudFlare CDN. All standard plans also include free SSL encryption and certificates.
If you’re like us, you need a little more customizability and flexibility. Thankfully, with InterServer you can create unlimited instances of MySQL databases, as well as alternate between PHP 5.5, 5.6, and PHP 7. Additionally, you can build your website on Ruby on Rails, Python, or even PERL. We loved the ability to of choose the right OS for our VPS servers as well.
One glaringly absent element of InterServer is its lack of live chat. Even so, we found that the company more than made up for it with a great phone support line, email support, and online ticketing which results in resolved queries quickly and effectively.
The company’s support is available 24/7 through their toll-free numbers, and we found that the company’s agents were professional and well-equipped to answer our queries and issues. If you prefer to find your own answers, you can check through InterServer’s great community forum or look through some of the company’s tutorials.
