HostAdvice Speaks to Bogdan Ionescu of MVPS

We have the pleasure to talk with Mr. Bogdan Ionescu from MVPS, a company dedicated to providing cloud VPS services.

We hope that you will enjoy this interview as much as we did.

What are the story and idea behind MVPS?

Most of the large companies in the cloud computing space are from the United States and they rarely offer more than 1-2 locations in the EU.

This has been problematic for European startups, which prefer to keep their data in the EU and to have their servers close to the markets they serve.

MVPS was started as a European project with the goal to provide quality VPS services at affordable rates in most European countries. We have managed to achieve this goal and we continue to expand our services.

What was the development of MVPS over the years? Where there any challenges on the road?

We started with a few servers in Germany and France, and we grew slowly from there. It was hard to find colocation providers, especially when we were small, and most large data centers would not even discuss with us after asking for a single rack.

The rising cost of IPs has also been a challenge to the point that it is very hard to sell cheap services at the current IP prices.

But we have managed to overcome these issues and have been adding 2 or 3 new locations each year, with Ireland being the latest one added last year.

The path to success is always hard. What are the core values of MVPS that moved the company toward success?

We’ve always been focused on quality, and we have used only enterprise dell servers from the beginning. We use premium upstream providers for our internet to ensure we have the best peering possible.

We’re firm believers in automation and we have always tried to offer anything the customer might require at the click of a button, so the customer does not have to send a support ticket and wait for our staff to do something to his service. We have used VPS services long before we have started MVPS, so we were customers first and already knew what was needed along with a VPS.

Finally, our support staff has always tried to reply very fast to the support requests, with an average reply time of less than 15 minutes.

What are the main products and services that MVPS is offering on the market?

Our main product is the VPS, which comes in multiple packages and flavors, and it’s available in 8 European countries.

We have also recently started providing dedicated servers in The Netherlands, which is mostly an enterprise product.

Can you tell us what exactly is VPS Server?

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a virtualized computer running a full operating system on shared hardware.

A physical server is running a hypervisor software that splits the physical server’s resources into multiple smaller (virtualized) servers while completely isolating them.

This allows a customer to pay only for the resources his application needs, rather than renting the whole physical machine.

Many customers are not that familiar with the hosting services and products. What is your approach with those customers?

Our services are most suitable for customers with basic Linux knowledge or at least some cPanel/Plesk experience.

We tend to direct such customers toward Plesk or cPanel and we have tried to add some features like firewall and DNS hosting into our service, to make their life easier.

We also provide tutorials and guides through our blog, many of which are created after aiding some customers and seeing there is a need for such a guide.

There are many companies that are accepting payments in cryptocurrencies. We also noticed that MVPS is offering the same service as well. How do you think that cryptocurrencies would change the hosting industry?

I do not believe cryptocurrencies will make a big change in this field, except for some increase in the sales of servers used for cryptocurrency projects (masternodes, stacking etc.). They come with advantages but there are also disadvantages involved.

For example, banks refuse to work with anything related to cryptocurrencies, making getting the payments to your account a painful experience.

On the other hand, they are non-refundable, and they reduce payment fraud a lot.

What are the new trends and technologies that will show on the market in the following period that would be crucial in changing the hosting industry in your opinion?

Most likely we will see more abstraction and a move towards Kubernetes or similar containerization technologies. The trend is not new, there’s still a long way to go until it will start dominating the market.

Hopefully, we will see a transition to IPv6 and a move towards RPKI to secure the IP transit.

Where do you see your company in 10 years?

We will finish our expansion to all European countries and will start to expand into the other continents as well.

Our products will continue to evolve and new technologies will be integrated and adapted to our customers’ needs.

Our market share will improve greatly, and we will be one of the main VPS providers in the EU.
