HostUpon is a privately owned company that has their offices in Toronto, Canada. They offer just about every type of hosting you could ask for, and do a pretty good job at it too. They have been in business for quite a long time, and have a good reputation for providing stable hosting that is both of high quality and affordable.
You’ll notice that many of the entry level hosting options come with some higher end features. Many customers won’t need some of these options, but it is nice to have them there just in case. Things like SSL certificates come included even with entry level shared hosting, which is often not the case.
Other than that, the company is quite similar to many others in terms of what types of things they offer and the general range of pricing. While they don’t stand out from the competition in any significant ways, they do offer good hosting at a very fair price, which is what most people will be looking for. Those who are targeting Canadian customers, or even those in the US will find a great hosting option with this company.
Uptime & Reliability
99.9% uptime guarantee for all hosting packages
HostUpon provides a 99.9% uptime guarantee across the board for all their packages. They don’t make it immediately obvious what happens if you drop below that level, but if it happens you just submit a ticket to get a discount on your next month of hosting.
Fortunately, they really don’t have too many outages so must customers will rarely, if ever, need to deal with this.
Looking through their social media support pages and other comments from current and former customers, there are very few complaints of outages or even slowness. This is, of course, a very good sign that they provide very stable hosting.
Quality hosting features even for entry level customers
This company offers a wide range of great features at all their package levels. They seemed to want to have an extensive base list of options for all their customers, with only a few extras for higher end hosting services. For example, everyone will benefit from the same 99.9% uptime guarantee, SSL certificates, cPanel, and more.
In addition to supporting the standard web features, they also provide assistance for things like Curl and Zend Optimizer, which are often things that other companies don’t work with.
As you move to different packages you will find that they have some unlimited options, and others that have limitations. Even those with limits, however, have them set so high that the average customer won’t ever run into issues. Overall, the features that are provided are at or above the average in the industry.
Good support but no live options
The tech support is provided by their team of Canadian technicians. They must be contacted through their online ticketing system, which is monitored 24/7. From all reports, it seems that they address tickets quickly and are able to get most problems resolved right away.
The one downside is that they don’t have any tech support phone number or a live chat option, which many people will miss.
Prices slightly lower than industry average
When you look through just about every package level you will find that the prices are slightly lower than what you will find at other companies. In most cases it is only a few dollars lower, if that, but still a good price.
For most people, the lower price won’t be enough to attract them on its own, but the fact that their overall services are also quite good will make this a great option for many people.
Great hosting with a variety of options
HostUpon offers many different hosting packages at levels ranging from entry level all the way up to dedicated servers. They are easy to work with and have been around for a long time, which will be important to many people. Overall, there is very little negative to say about the company.
Hosting options at all levels
Lower than average price points (for some hosting packages)
Free migration from other hosting companies
No live tech support
Too many packages and features to choose from, may be confusing
We had the company as a hosting provider for nearly 10 years. They were exceptional for almost 9 of them. Something drastically went wrong with this company. Initially, we purchased the unlimited plan (unlimited domains and email addresses). We never changed the plan. The company called it their "Starter Unlimited Plan." They changed the name of the plan later to "Business Plan." We were paying for the unlimited option regardless of what it was called. During the final year of service, the company downgraded our plan to a "Starter" limited plan without consulting with us while still charging us for the unlimited plan and even while increasing the price. Upon our notifying them of this, they would provide no explanation. They would not acknowledge their error. We were paying more than a current Business Plan member was, yet there were only providing us with a starter plan that was the lowest plan they offered. Essentially, the company reduced our service plan while still taking the money for the better plan. The company lacks integrity to say the least.
I went with these guys because they're apparently Canadian and "were" rated pretty high. However, as soon as my prepaid plan is up I'm leaving. There is no way that updating Wordpress versions and a few plugins on 5 sites that barely get any traffic should take HOURS every single time. Updates take forever, time out and FAIL half the time so I have to retry over and over. Support is useless basically saying it's my fault because my sites get too much traffic. Really? If you can't handle the little traffic I get then you shouldn't be hosting AT ALL. Don't waste you time or money on these guys.
This is the absolute worst hosting company possible. You can;t call them, when you use their chat, there is only one guy on there name Luke and he is a POS. This guy is so rude and sarcastic that i want to reach through the screen and strangle mim. I have over 20 clients dealing with 6 different hosting companies and this is the worst
Our organization is migrating our web site to HostUpon. in processing the migration we encounter a requirement to first move our nameservers to HostUpon from our current provider. However we are simply trying to move one of six websites to HostUpon at the point in time. A nameserver is a change management nightmare for the other web services we run. I was escalated this issue and able to get help and recommendation to an alternative. I was able to get a definite answer from a support representative named Luke without the need to trudge through creating a username and then opening a ticket by using their clever support chat system. That was the simplest request for help I've seen in a long time. Thank you for the excellent service.
I did not think anyone would beat my last host (jaguarpc) for the worst hosting ever, But after 5 years with hostupon i have started looking for a new place. the uptime is crap, servers are slow, ftp connections get rejected if you upload more than 10 files every 10 minutes. they changed the cpanel hosting without warning. now half my sites wont work. HUGE security flaws in multiple areas of their "hosting" and the tech support is like talking to a wall. i swear it might even be a chat bot as humans can not be that slow and uneducated in hosting. Ive tried countless times to resolve the FTP issues, or the security issues., etc etc and they always have the most generic responses to basically tell me its all on my end. Basic cpanel hosting, find somewhere else. WORST HOSTING EVER
HostUpon support makes smoother transition to their system and more confident in exploring the new features they offer as we know we would have their help. I have started using their Mailing List feature with their help. They are wonderful and very competent.
