Also included in their plans are SSL certificates, DDoS protection, malware scanners, firewalls, spam detection, and regular site backups, as well as security settings like SSH access and 2-FA authentication.

Finally, there’s a load balancer plan best suited for websites and mobile apps that experience huge traffic spikes.

And the winner is… DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean’s features are quite different from those of traditional hosts like HostGator. Being a cloud platform, DigitalOcean’s hosting architecture is optimized for better security, speed, and performance. DigitalOcean wins this round with more features.

I ran the same tests on DigitalOcean and the results were much better than HostGators’.

The results from GTMetrix showed that DigitalOcean had a TTFB of 305 ms and an overall performance of 96%:

DigitalOcean’s dashboard is much more complex than HostGator’s and you can do so much with it. On the other hand, both of their cPanels are very simple and intuitive. Personally, I prefer HostGator’s UI over that of DigitalOcean – it’s more user-friendly and easy to navigate.

All of HostGator’s hosting plans come with a free SSL certificate and CloudFlare support. For an extra $5.99, you can install SiteLock Security and turn on daily malware scans on your website. With the advanced Prevent and Prevent plus plans, you get additional security features such as a Web Application Firewall, DDoS protection, and Database scanning. Backups are carried out automatically as long as they’re less than 10GB.

DigitalOcean Security

DigitalOcean uses SSL encryption and DDoS protection to shield its entire network edge from data theft and DDoS attacks. SSH keys are used to provide a more secure way of logging into your Droplets. Firewalls are implemented throughout the network at no additional cost. Users can configure their cluster to receive automatic patch updates. Finally, backups of each database are taken and stored off-site.

DigitalOcean has better security features overall compared to conventional hosts like HostGator. Most of the features are also built into the architecture, and for advanced security features, you simply pay based on your requirements.
